One For One Guidelines

ONE FOR ONE Drinking Guidelines:

  • You absolutely MUST stick to having your water in between each drink. If for whatever reason, you miss a drink of water  and have two drinks in a row, then make sure you catch up with a double serving of water before your next drink. This is why it’s called ONE FOR ONE, one water for one drink. Period. No ifs/buts/excuses!
  • The ideal of ONE FOR ONE is to drink your water at roughly the same pace, as you would your beer. In fact, the slower you drink your water, the better.
  • ONE FOR ONE assumes you are sticking to one type of drink the whole drinking session. Mixing drinks greatly reduces the positive impact of ONE FOR ONE. Having said that, if you are in a situation where you are having a variety of different drinks, still stick to your ONE FOR ONE. It will still help you a lot through out the night, and the next morning.
  • The amount of water to drink when undertaking in ONE FOR ONE is not an exact science as everyone is different with different levels of response to alcohol. It will take a few tries to work out what exact ratio works well for you. If you don’t know how much water to drink, at the very least, drink some water in between drinks, and tweak the amount of water to drink as you go depending on how you are feeling (e.g.: if you feel yourself getting drunk rather quickly, up the water intake).
  • To help you out, as mentioned previously, a good starting point is to go for about 285mL (10 Oz) of water for each “standard drink”. I know, I know, we don’t carry measuring cups with us when we go out. I mention the exact measurement so that we’re all on the same page – you don’t have to stick to that exact measurement – just use that to approximate a starting point for yourself. 285mL (10 Oz) corresponds to a middy glass in Sydney, Australia – basically a large glass of water. This roughly corresponds to half a pint in the UK/Ireland and Germany, and a little over a half of a pint in the US (Based on measurements mentioned in this site). Some examples of a “standard drink” (as defined in Australia:
    – 1x 30mL (1 Oz) shot of spirits
    – 1 x 100mL (3.4 Oz) glass of wine
    – 1 x 285mL (10 Oz)  glass of beer
    – I would also add one serving of your standard mixed drink to this list as well: a serving of Bourbon + Coke / Voda + Lemonade / etc..
  • Since mixing drinks complicates things, cocktails are particularly tricky as the alcoholic potency is greatly increased. I am not a cocktail drinker, so unfortunately can’t give a more indicative starting point, but I would start off with one-and-a-half  middy glasses (285mL / 10 Oz) of water between cocktails, and start from there.
